Ma-a Davao City

Our approach for this project was to create a design narrative that cohesively ties the yards with the pre-existing house and the surrounding environs.

We imagined the front yard - which is simultaneously front fence and landscape element - as both functional and gestural. Far more than a facility for privacy, it is essential to mediating the dynamic between public road and the passive, more genial form of security enforced between neighbors of the community.

For the more private back yard, we skipped the typical notions of a pool and decking space in favor of an art gallery-like outdoor setting. We composed together a sculptural steel fence by the pool to reflect its angular and porous expression on the water. There is a sunken ground for nighttime leisures, a decked path that wounds its way organically around the house, and a focal structure of bended metal sheets to house a sauna.
